Hi guys, thanks for checking out my blog dedicated to doggy training! Chances are that if you are on this page you already have an interest in training dogs so I wont bother trying to convince you of all of the joys and benefits of doggy training. Instead I will get straight into all the great information that you are looking for. I have been a professional dog trainer for over 15 years and I am still as passionate today as I was when I first started. I decided to create this blog to share some of my knowledge and create a great resource for dog training lovers all over the world. I'm sure all of us can remember when we have had our best clothes ruined, or been scratched or knocked over by an over eager dog, whether it be our own dog or someone else's. If it is your own dog you can probably even remember the time when your dog was a cute little fluff ball and it was very funny when he tried to jump up on you. Not so fun if your little puppy has turned into a big fully grown dog.....

The problem is that because we are so different to dogs we often send mixed messages when we are trying to train them and this can lead to confusion about how we want the dog to behave. By far the most important thing in training your dog is to make sure that right from the start you establish yourself as the pack leader and make sure that you establish firm ground rules.

It can be a good idea to plan your training in writing. How you want the dog to behave, what commands you want him to understand etc. This will help to make the training regulated and keep you on target for your chosen goals.

When you think about it, it is very easy to see how puppies learn to jump up. When they are a small little cute fluff ball we call them over and encourage them to jump onto our lap for a cuddle and then we make a big fuss of them. Can you blame them for thinking that jumping up is a good thing? Although it may be hard, what you need to do is teach your puppy to sit before give him attention. He will soon learn that if he wants a fuss from you he will need to sit down first and eventually it will just become natural to him.

The first thing that you need to do is work out what you want your dogs response to be when they are greeting people. Some people like their dog to sit politely and wait for a pat from the people, others don't mind them walking up to them and some people like their dogs to do something like run off and get a toy for person to play with them with. Whatever it is that you decide you want your dog to do, you need to be consistent with this in all of your training.

Part of a dogs desire to jump up comes from the fact that when dogs greet other dogs they do so by poking their faces close together and sniffing each other. So when your dog wants to greet someone it is natural for them to want to get their face closer to theirs and this leads to them jumping up. Understanding this is key to learning how you can teach your dog not to jump up and how and why he might respond as you are training.

Just remember that you need to be consistent in your quest to train your dog not to jump up. If you allow him to jump up when you are wearing old clothes that you don't care about you cant then expect him to be able to tell the difference when you are wearing clothes that you don't want ruined. Don't punish your dog for doing what comes natural to him by greeting you, instead teach him how to greet you so that you are both happy.

How to stop puppies biting

No matter how cute your puppy is it is never a good idea to allow them to play with your hands and feet. This only teaches them that biting skin is ok and part of playing. Even though it can be very cute having a little puppy playing tug of war with your fingers, you are teaching them very bad habits and it wont be so cute in the future when they are fully grown. As a rule of thumb never let a puppy do something once that you don't want to become a habit. It is much easier to teach a puppy the right habits now then to try and retrain a grown up dog. Because puppies are very sociable you can train them by refusing to engage in play with them. As soon as the puppy bites or nips part of your body give a loud yelp and an angry look and then walk away. After a little break, get a toy and begin playing with the puppy again. If he tries to bite your hand repeat the process again.

If this doesn't seem to be training the puppy very fast you can add a more physical element to the training to speed up the process. For example when you are playing with the puppy and he nips your fingers use the same steps as above but also take something noisy and shake it or drop in on the floor next to the puppy. The idea is for this to scare the puppy a little bit and he will begin to associate biting with this and will avoid biting to avoid this thing he dislikes.

If after this you are still having problems you may have to introduce a physical action such as tapping the dog on the nose or the legs as well as the other things above. Whatever it is that you decide to do, the most important thing is that the puppy recognises that your reaction to him biting you is bad so that he will want to avoid making you have that reaction. As he begins to learn you can reduce the reaction that you have, eventually bringing it down to a simple "no".

You also need to be aware of the games that you play with your puppy may actually encourage him to bite you and send him the wrong signals which will slow down the whole training process. Make sure that any games you do play with him such as tug of war and jumping for toys don't involve him making contact with your skin.

How to stop puppies chewing

Everyone knows that puppies like to chew. Whilst this may be frustrating to us, it is a natural and healthy habit for puppies. During the age of 3-6 months they go through a teething process and they chew for stress management, exploration and pain relief. Even though this is a healthy and natural habit it is something that you are going to want to have some control over because it can cause alot of destruction otherwise. Don't worry though, with a few useful tips you can control their chewing habits.

The key thing is that rather than trying to stop your puppies behaviour you need to accommodate it. One thing that works really well is to take their favorite toys and put them in the freezer for a while. For some reason puppies love to chew on these things and they will be occupied for ours, not chewing your furniture and at the same time satisfying their natural need to chew something. You also need to think rationally when you do have problems with your dog chewing things. You can't expect a puppy to know the difference between your expensive dress shoes and his toys if they are in the same place. It is up to you to "puppy proof" your house and make sure that your things are safely out of the puppies reach and that they clearly know what are their toys and what they cant touch.

Also remember that puppies have a crazy ability to get into the tightest of places. A door that is slightly ajar or a box that isn't quite shut can just make a puppy too curious and you can bet that they will find a way in.

In terms of actually disciplining the puppy, you need to be consistent. Each time you catch him chewing something that you don't want him to you must respond with the same response each time. Whether this be a simple "NO" or something else, make sure that it is always the same and that the puppy realizes that this sound means that he is doing the wrong thing. And always make sure that you reprimand the puppy at the exact time he does the bad thing so that they realize exactly what it is that they are being scolded for. Otherwise it can lead to confusion about what they actually did wrong and will slow the whole process of training down.

If you find this process slow and frustrating just remember that the skills that you are teaching your puppy now will stay with them for the rest of their lives and will in turn make your life much easier. How to stop dog barking

To understand how we can stop dogs from barking we first need to know why they bark in the first place.

The reason is that like people, dogs need to communicate and they do this through barking. Also just like humans, dogs have feelings and responses so it makes sense that if you can tune into these feelings and deal with them you can reduce or eliminate their need to communicate them by barking. This is not as hard as it may first seem because the feelings of dogs are not as complex as humans and with the right know how you can discover what they are barking for and deal with the problem so that they wont feel so compelled to bark all the time.

Barking is a natural method of communication and all dogs do it. The only problem is that they only have one word in their vocabulary. Therefore they have to use this one sound to express all of their feelings which can lead to the constant and exasperating barking that you are most probably experiencing if you are reading this blog.

You need to work out what is making your dog bark. Is it next doors cat, the cars driving by, people walking past the gate or hunger?

So how do you stop this barking?

The key here is to create a new link between the event and response in the dogs mind. How you can do this is to create a similar situation to when your dog normally barks. For instance if he usually barks when someone walks past the gate set it up so that this happens. Have someone walk past the gate and when the dog runs off to bark grab him by the collar and firmly give the command "No!". You need to be careful not to yell though because this will only make the dog think that you are joining in on it's efforts to alert everyone of the intruder walking past the gate.

If the dog stops barking after say "No!" reward him but not immediately because this might be seen as rewarding him for barking. A way around this is to follow the "No!" command with another such as "Sit" and when he does this then you can reward him. This is how to stop dog barking.

So what if you have done all of this and the dog still barks after you given him the command? Well you need to take more physical action such as using your hands to close his mouth. Give the "No!" command whilst doing this but remember not to yell.

It is essential that as soon as the dog displays good behavior you reward him immediately with a praise or pat.

How to stop dogs pulling on the leash

Now then, down to business and how to stop a dog pulling on it's lead.The most important thing to remember is that you are the boss. If you want your dog to behave correctly you need to be a pack leader. And to establish yourself as a leader, one of the best things to do is go walking with your dog!

You can begin with a standard buckle collar and a strong lead. I don't recommend retractable leads at this stage. It is best if you use a wide collar so that you don't hurt the dog.

You need to always make your dog sit and stay as you are attaching the collar and lead. Don't allow the dog to get to excited and jump around. You need to be in command constantly.

Firstly walk out the door and have the dog sit and stay inside until you are outside, only then let the dog follow you.

The dog should walk on your left hand side always. If he becomes tempted to change stop and persuade him back to the left side and then give him lots of praise before continuing to walk.

To maintain control over the dog you need to make sure that he does not walk to far in front, because if you allow this to happen then the dog is walking you and that is no way to maintain control. A good rule of thumb is that the dogs shoulder should not be much in front of your own legs.

If your dog should venture to far out in front stop walking. Give a little tug to get his attention and then gently pull him back until he is back in the right place.

You need to have a training noise established for your dog. A clicking of the tongue or other simple sound works well. You can use this sound instead of the word "no", which can become white noise to a dog during a walk. Use this noise at the same time as the little tug on the leash.

As you are walking if your dog stays within an acceptable distance for a period of time give him lost of praise in a happy voice. It can also help to carry treats for these occasions. If the dog walks to far forward repeat the stop, pull and noise.

Determination, patience and persistence are the keys here. It can take weeks or even months before most dogs become perfect walkers. You cant expect your dog to be a polite walker in just one day. You need to keep training and practicing.

If you lose patience or become upset you are just putting the dog back in control. You and your dog will get along the best if you are the clear leader.

If you find that your dong is always charging forward no matter how much practicing, you can try adding a simple touch to your technique. So as well as the light tug and the training sound try a light touch on his leg or putting your hand in front of his face. These additional signals can help him to learn faster and reduce your frustration.

Toilet Train Your Dog

If you are lucky enough to get a 7-week-old puppy, there is no excuse for any bad habits to develop over his lifetime. Puppies learn INSTANTLY when they are that young, and if you use the proper training methods, gentle but consistent, he will behave like an angel his whole life through.

The most important training, of course, is housebreaking. Boys are easier than girls because exploring outside is their favorite thing. They just cannot get enough of all the new smells out there!

The main key to housebreaking is watching. Watch your puppy AND the clock. Once every hour is not too often on a day he is active and the weather is good. The younger the pup, the more often he needs to go out, mostly because he is growing so fast. He must drink more water to fuel his metabolism than he does as an adult. Also, since he eats three or four times a day, you know what that means.

Watch him for subtle changes. If he is happily chewing his toy, and gets up suddenly with his nose to the floor, move quickly! He is ready to squat! If he has had a nice nap, get him out of his crate and outside right away. If he has just had a good grooming, it stimulates his circulation and guess what? Time to go out again. And of course after a meal, watch him extra close.

Things to remember:

--- Do not punish him for mistakes. They are YOUR fault. Every time you take him out he will go, and praise praise and praise! Happy face, laughter, happy noises! He loves your happy face. When he makes a mistake, your frown and your face turned away from him is all the punishment he needs. He will get the point.

--- He is learning English, you must use the same phrases over and over. "Good go potty!" "Hafta go potty?" "Wanna go potty?" He can learn in one afternoon that "go potty" means a jaunt outside and your happy face. Whatever phrase you choose, stick with it.

--- I cannot recommend strongly enough getting a crate. They truly help with all phases of his training. They make him more secure, provide him with his very own private space and a place for him to hide his favorite toys and chewies. This is even more important if you have other adult dogs in the house.

Be consistent, always be kind and gentle, and be patient as he learns your language, and your puppy will always look forward to his training sessions. Dogs love to work!
